For those of you who don’t already know me, my name is Jonathan Mayer, and I am going on my third year at Claremont Middle School. I am writing this letter in association with our assistant principal, Tonia Coleman, who is also in her third year at Claremont. We would like to extend a warm welcome to the incoming 6th grade class and express our deepest gratitude for the community support we have received over the past couple of years. Ms. Coleman and I feel honored and humbled to serve as instructional leaders in such a caring and dynamic community school, and we look forward to another great year ahead, celebrating the diversity, intelligence, creativity and achievements of our amazing Claremont scholars.

The first day of school will be Aug. 22, and we want to take this opportunity to share some important information about preparations for the 2016-17 school year.

REGISTRATION: Registering students in advance makes the first week of school much easier on everyone, we ask all Claremont families to attend your designated registration session in August:

  • 6th Grade Registration: Tuesday, Aug. 16, from 8 a.m. to noon or 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.
  • 7th & 8th Grade Registration: Wednesday, Aug. 17, from 8 a.m. to noon or 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.

In addition to submitting forms and purchasing P.E. uniforms, registration day is your opportunity to learn about our highlights, goals, and objectives for the coming school year. We will continue to develop these goals together as a community, building on the tremendous work by our teachers, support staff, the Claremont PTA, the School Site Council, and all of our other inspired and visionary committees.

STUDENT HANDBOOK: We have set in place procedures and protocols (both inside and outside of the classroom) to create the safest and best learning environment possible for all students. Our policies regarding student expectations, attire, cell phone use, attendance, restorative justice and student achievement are outlined in a handbook that will be distributed to all Claremont students. We will present these policies during the orientation sessions on Aug. 16 and 17 and review them with students the first week of school during their Advisory classes.

SCHOOL DAY: The school day will begin at 8:25 and end at 3:25. Minimum days will begin at 8:30 and end at 1:19. As in years past, 6th grade students will be on a different bell schedule from the 7th and 8th graders. For the second consecutive year we will have Advisory, which will serve as both a supportive “homeroom” for students as well as a place where we teach school-wide norms, build relationships, build a “Growth Mind Set,” prepare for Student Led Conferences (SLCs) and silent read. Advisory will be 35 minutes on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. There will be no Advisory on minimum days.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT: Mark your calendar for Back to School Night on Thursday, Sept. 15. This is an opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and get a sense of homework policies, expectations, and how you can best support your student. Further details will be available in September.

On behalf of the teachers and staff of Claremont Middle School, we look forward to seeing you at registration next week and welcoming all of our students back to school on Monday, Aug. 22, at 8:25 a.m. sharp.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Mayer
