Community-hosted parties and events are a key component of the annual Claremont PTA Auction, providing a fun way for Claremont families to raise money for our school while enjoying a range of social activities and special events. Below is a complete schedule of auction parties offered in 2017 and 2018. Some are already sold out, but if space is still available, you can purchase available party spots online by visiting the Claremont PTA Auction Catalog.
Nov. 12 – Walk on the Wild Side with Outdoor Afro
Hosted by Michelle Quinn, Sarah McGee and Rue Mapp, $20 per person, 9:30-11 a.m.
Join us for a short guided Sunday morning walk (no more than 2-3 miles) with Rue Mapp, founder of Outdoor Afro and a former Claremont parent. We will talk about what we see out in the wilds of the East Bay (exact park and meeting place will be provided), as well as the social justice issues that have historically kept African Americans and others out of parks, a situation that is changing around the country. After a short walk, we will stop for some refreshments.
Nov. 16 – Benefit Cosmetics Beauty Bash
Hosted by Karen Black, Michelle Bilensky and Laura Burnett, $35 per person, 7-9 p.m.
Join your hosts for a most beautifying experience with light appetizers and libations. Enjoy a lash tint or an eyebrow wax and make-up application to enhance one’s outer self. Free amazing gift with purchase — last year’s gift was a pink umbrella!
Dec. 2 – Magic the Gathering Draft [SOLD OUT]
Hosted by Debbie Berne and Laura Mytels, $25 per person, 1-6 p.m.
A 16-person, three-round Magic the Gathering draft. All cards will be provided. Participants should have some experience playing MTG (the game will not be taught). Pizza and drinks provided. The game is for students only.
Dec. 3 – Soup in a Jar Gift Making Party
Hosted by Jill Bergman $25 per person, 3-5 p.m.
Join us in making holiday gifts of Soup in a Jar! We will be layering dried ingredients in glass jars, with pre-printed instructions. All ingredients and jars will be provided. Each signed up individual will make two jars, ready to be given as gifts, by the end of the event. Light snacks will be offered. Come as a whole family, or send your kids alone.
Dec. 8 – Holiday Shopping Night at Nathan & Co.
Hosted by Elizabeth Falkner and Kevin Kenny, Elaina and Robert Briant, Lisa and Charlie Cartolano, $20 per person, 7-9 p.m.
Get a jump start on your holiday shopping and earn money for Claremont at the same time! Nathan & Co. has generously offered to donate 10% of all sales to the Claremont PTA. Come and enjoy wine, bubbly, and light appetizers as you peruse this fabulous shopping destination on College Avenue. Nathan and his staff will help you select the perfect gifts for your friends and family and provide complimentary gift wrap for all purchases.
Dec. 17 – Zumba/UJam Party
Hosted by Sara Kahn Richard and Jhunehl Fortaleza, $15 per person, 10:30 a.m. to noon
Come dance with us! Join 6th grade teachers Jhunehl Fortaleza and Sara Kahn in a 90-minute dance fitness class at the Claremont Middle School gym. Zumba and UJam are both dance fitness formats for all levels. We will lead and you just follow along and burn some calories. No experience necessary! Bring your kids, friends and neighbors to sweat and smile together. Music selection ideal for middle school age and older but all are welcome. Students must have an adult with them.
Jan. 7 – Sushi Rolling Party [SOLD OUT]
Hosted by Lisa Fernandez, $30 per person, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Are the kids tired of their boring lunches? Want to spice up your dinners without breaking the bank? Learn to roll your own sushi with Lisa Fernandez! We’ll roll and cook and eat our bounty when we’re done. Kids are welcome.
Jan. 20 – Beer & Cheese Party
Hosted by Jessica and Ali Cannon, $40 per person, 6-10 p.m.
A long-standing tradition for an auction fundraiser, the Cannon’s Annual Beer & Cheese Party will feature craft beer tastings poured by amateur craft beer enthusiast Ali Cannon. He will be serving up IPAs that kick you with their hoppiness, yet demand inquiry, while also exposing you to the joy of porters, Belgian style craft beers, and barrel-aged stouts. Beers will be paired with cheese tastings to die for delivered by the Cannon’s dear friend, Mariah Sparks, Cheese Goddess extraordinaire, who has been a cheese monger at Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco for over 25 years. Her academic and passionate knowledge of cheese will leave you craving more!
Feb. 3 – Chiles Rellenos & Chicken Mole Dinner [SOLD OUT]
Hosted by Sarah and Kai Drekmeier and Sarah Earl-Novell and John Claisse, open bid, 6-9 p.m.
Mexico native and local chef Guadalupe Olvera will be preparing an authentic meal of Oaxacan Chicken Mole, Chiles Rellenos, slow-cooked beans and Mexican rice for six couples. Dinner will be served with a selection of wine pairings and will be followed by a surprise dessert.
Feb. 4 – Athleta Trunk Show Wine and Cheese Party
Hosted by Lisa Fernandez and Alexis Chettiar, $20 per person, 3-5 p.m.
If you love Athleta workwear, yoga wear and jogging gear, this is the party for you. A representative from Athleta will bring a truckload of clothes and accessories to a beautiful home where you can shop in the comfort of Alexis Chettiar’s living room (or backyard depending on the weather.) Wine and cheese will be served. (When you sign up, please list your size and what sort of Athleta wear you prefer so we can customize the party to suit your needs.) For women only.
Feb. 8 – Tootsie’s Party
Hosted by Katie Garrett, Edana Anderson and Jenny Yap, $20 per person, 7-9 p.m.
Join us for a night out with other parents, teachers, staff, friends and neighbors of Claremont Middle School. Enjoy good food and drink and do some shopping. A percentage of all proceeds go to support CMS. For women only.
Feb. 10 – Bee Gees & Billiards Party
Hosted by Aidan & Rachel Wylde, Jennifer Fletcher and Paul Troutman, $35 per person, 6-10 p.m.
Lively cocktail party with food, a casual pool tournament, and an awesome live band, the “East Bay Gees,” led by Claremont parents Beth McKenna and Rick Kvoriak. Many Bee Gees songs will featured, along with other psychedelic and pop classics. Also, every year they promise to play “Down the Road Apiece” and “Jumping Jack Flash.” So far, they’ve been true to their principles and ignored me. Yay. We will have enough food that you shouldn’t need to eat dinner before you come. Music will be early, so the neighbors don’t call the police. Friends are welcome.
Feb. 11 – Cupcake Decorating Party
Hosted by Marla Erojo and Elizabeth Falkner, $35 per person, 1-3 p.m.
Create Dazzling Cupcakes! Combine fillings and frostings with gorgeous decorations for crowd-pleasing treats. All materials and light snacks will be provided.
Feb. 11 & March 4 – Homebrewing 101
Hosted by Adam Mendelson-Reyes, $80 per person, 1:30-4:30 p.m. both days
Learn how to make beer from Dylan Cardiff, Head Brewer from Ale Industries, and Adam Mendelson, homebrewing hobbyist. During this two-part brewing session, you will observe, participate in, and enjoy the fruits of the entire brewing process, from grains to glass. Day 1: We will brew 2 different batches of beer. Dylan will lead us through the classic process of “all-grain” brewing. Adam will share an abbreviated stovetop approach to “extract” brewing. Light snacks and beer will be served. Day 2: Three weeks later we will reconvene to taste our all-grain creation on draft while we bottle our extract batch. All attendees will then be able to take bottles home with them. Light snacks and beer will be served.
Feb. 24 – Unconventional Cheese Pairing [SOLD OUT]
Hosted by Morgan and Laurent Rouquette, Sally Barry and Greg Kerwin, open bid, 7-11 p.m.
From potato chips to sushi, we’ve seen some pretty creative cheese pairing combos. Whether by design or by complete accident, some of the most fun and exciting cheese pairings are found just outside the box, or in some cases, quite a ways outside the box. Join us, and Market Hall Foods Cheese Monger/Manager, Sterling Duke, in pushing the flavor and texture boundaries to create and experience unconventional cheese pairings. We will serve appetizers, cheese pairings, wine and dessert.
March 3 – Salad Soirée
Hosted by Julia and Leah Marquez, $25 per person, noon to 3 p.m.
Salads go with every meal. They’re healthy, inexpensive, easy to put together, and in California we have the freshest produce year round. If you buy bottled dressing or avoid salads altogether, and you are ready to change those habits – this workshop is for you! We will make and try a variety of delicious salads and finish our afternoon with a well-deserved rich dessert to make up for all those healthy greens. You will take home some home-made dressing and several excellent and easy recipes. All ages are welcome.
March 3-11 – Women’s Truckee Retreat [SOLD OUT]
Hosted by Laura Burnett, Kerri Hurtado, Morgan Rouquette and Sally Barry, $300 per person
Ready to get away for a fun and restful weekend in the mountains? Enjoy being treated to delicious food and drinks while in a peaceful setting with comfortable accommodations. You decide if you want to read a book, chat with friends, go for a hike, catch a yoga class, cross country or downhill ski, showshoe (weather permitting), soak in the nearby hot tub and sauna, shop historic Truckee, play ping pong or just sleep! This is a women’s only event. Two participants will have to share a king-size bed, and two more will have to share a queen-size bed, so consider signing up with a friend.
March 10 – The 80’s: An Interactive Experience
Hosted by Katie Broughton and Mark Martin, Steve Wiersema and Anne Wilkinson, $40 per person, 7-10 p.m.
Relive the ’80s while enjoying food and drinks. We’ll immerse you in the decade of Thriller, Spielberg movies, Atari, Alf, Def Leppard, big hair, Violent Femmes, D&D, etc, including interactive experiences reminiscent of MTV, Nickelodeon, Double Dare, and maybe even Dynasty! Come join us, it’ll be gnarly dude. ’80’s garb is recommended but not required.
March 21 – Wine Mine Party: Tapas & Wine on Telegraph
Hosted by Liz Orlin and John Ifcher and Lyn Hikida and Morris Dye, $25 per person, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Join us at the Wine Mine on Telegraph Avenue for a fun evening of tapas and Spanish wine. While enjoying delicious tapas, sample five Spanish wines at Wine Mine (a Temescal favorite with excellent wines at reasonable prices).
March 24 – Scavenger Run
Hosted by Richie and Magda Boulet, $15 per person, 9 a.m.
A problem-solving, selfie-taking, running adventure through the streets and hidden pathways of Rockridge! You and a partner (or several partners) will decipher clues and find your way to each checkpoint, using your phone or camera and collect “selfies” to mark your progress. There will be overall prizes as well as random raffle prizes after the race. Strap your shoes on, because you should expect to run 3-5 miles … or maybe more depending on your problem-solving skills. All ages welcome.
March 25 – Beer Tasting at Trumer Berkeley
Hosted by Saravanan Chettiar and Lars Larson, $25 person, 5:30-8 p.m.
Enjoy a brewery tour and beer tasting at the fabulous Trumer Berkeley. The brewmaster, Lars, is a Claremont parent. He will personally take you through the beer brewing process. Don’t miss this rare opportunity!
April 15 – New Orleans Jazz Dinner [SOLD OUT]
Hosted by Amy and Eddie Ortega, Jill Foley and Tom Zakim, $75 per person, 6-10 p.m.
Join us for a fun evening, and feel like you are in the French Quarter down in New Orleans. Enjoy a NOLA-inspired meal paired with exceptional drinks and live jazz. You will not want to miss this delicious and elegant sit-down dinner catered by Claremont’s own Amy Ortega of Charmed Catering.
April 21 – Spanish Tapas and Sangria Party
Hosted by Mari Reyes, Debbie Berne, Jennifer West, Dodie Lindsay, Jennifer Walker, Allyson Hitt , Laura Deehan, and Anita Purohit, $60 per person
Hola! Have you ever dreamed of sitting in an Andalusian patio listening to a Spanish guitar while eating amazing tapas and drinking sangria? Dream no more! Join us for a sumptuous Spanish feast that will include a variety of traditional and modern tapas (of course we will include paella!). To help us digest the meal, we will serve traditional Sangria. But make some room for Spanish desserts and Moscatel.
April 29 – Beers & Such at Arthur Mac’s
Hosted by Saravanan Chettiar, Chris Schreiber and Tom Kirchstetter, $35 per person, 4-6 p.m.
Is there a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than hanging out with a bunch of dads over beers and pizzas? I mean football season is over (the Raiders sucked anyway), it is too early to watch the Warriors, and it’s probably been a long winter of rainy afternoons. The sun just came out so just show up, get a couple of beers, some pizza, and chill. We did this last year and all of us had an awesome time.
May 5 – Whiskey Hold ’em Poker Party [SOLD OUT]
Hosted by Bob Gammon and Eric Leve, $40 per person, 8 p.m.
Join us for a great evening of Texas Hold ’em poker and fine whiskey tasting. We’ll be serving outstanding artisanal whiskeys from Japan, Scotland, and the United States, along with selected craft beers. And we’ll be playing Texas Hold ’em tournament style, with cash prizes for the first-, second-, and third-place winners. Note: The $40 entry fee is for the Claremont Auction fundraiser. There will be an additional $40 buy-in for the poker tournament for those who wish to play. Proceeds from the poker buy-in will be split among the first-, second-, and third-place winners of the tournament.
May 6 – Ladies Sunday Brunch [SOLD OUT]

April 19 – Trivia Night
Hosted by Amanda and Marc Acheson, Etienne Lehrer and Shona Armstrong and Zac Unger, $40 per person, 7-10:30 p.m.
Come test your smarts and your ability to find random factoids floating around in your brain under pressure! Join your friends and hosts and take part in a fun and exciting trivia night. The format will be small teams of 4-5 people and we will play multiple games. We will provide alcohol and snacks.
Sept. 8 – Game Night
Hosted by Ethan Andelman and Laura Mytels, $30 per person, 7-11 p.m.
Join your fellow Claremont parents for a strategy game party! We’ll have several tables going with various European-style strategy games available to play, including titles such as Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Puerto Rico, and Carcassone. All levels of experience welcome – your hosts will help you learn any of these games you may be playing for the first time! Snacks and drinks will be served. Middle school and older students who enjoy playing European-style strategy games are welcome to attend as well – but they need to be prepared to hold their own!
Sept. 22 – Back to School Cocktail Party
Hosted by Sarah Earl-Novell and John Claisse, Maxi Lilley and Eric Faurot, and Sarah and Kai Drekmeier, $50 per person, 7-10 p.m.
Come celebrate the beginning of another school year and meet more of the community. We will be offering delicious signature cocktails, beer & wine and other refreshments, light bites, a beautiful view of the sunset and the San Francisco Bay and, of course, unparalleled Claremont company. Now that the kids are back in school, treat yourself and kick the school year off right with this fun gathering. This event sold out last year so be sure to buy your tickets early!
Oct. 13 – The Fiesta
Hosted by Stefanie and David Deuber, Caryn and Terence Doherty, and Sharie and Jason Mendrey, $30 per person, 7-10 p.m.
We invite you to venture South of the Border (the Oakland/Berkeley border) for a fiesta to remember. We will serve up delectable taco truck fare, magnificent margaritas and more. Mix and mingle with fellow Claremont fiesta lovers while you enjoy the flavors of Mexico.
