Get Involved

We welcome all parents and guardians to our school for visits and encourage them to become involved their children’s education. Families, neighborhood businesses, and community service organizations also provide much-needed financial resources and sweat equity, helping to create an attractive, thriving learning environment for all our students. There are many ways to become part of the Claremont community:

• Participate in parent groups. Three parent-staff groups meet monthly, offering opportunities ranging from information gathering to shaping school policy.

Parent-Teacher Association. Attending PTA meetings is great way to find out what’s going on at school, how to get involved, and how to support your child’s learning. Meetings are the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm in Room 18, preceded by dinner at 6 pm. Spanish interpretation and babysitting are provided. Click here for more about the PTA.

School Site Council. This group of parents and staff reviews and revises the school’s plan for student achievement—from instructional focus to family engagement strategies—and determines how federal funds should be spent at the school. Meetings are the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 in Room 1.

English Learner’s Advisory Council. Claremont’s Spanish-speaking families meet and talk to the principal with an interpreter present at these meetings, held the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 in Room 1.

• Teach or tutor in the after-school program. Some of Claremont’s after-school classes—e.g., computer animation, website design, and yearbook—are taught by parents. Other community members do volunteer tutoring. For more information, please contact the after-school program coordinator at 879-3170.

Participate in Adult Math Nights. Claremont math teachers show adults what their children are being taught and get a feel for what the students experience in their math classes every day—and have great fun at the same time. Meetings are held bimonthly on second Tuesdays from 5 to 7 PM in Room 16a. Check the Knightline for upcoming dates.

Volunteer. There are many ways volunteers can help in the classroom, office, and schoolyard. Please download the Volunteer Handbook for information. The Claremont  PTA also coordinates volunteer help for school mailings, garden and school beautification efforts, art and music events, library support, staff appreciation efforts, fundraising, the salad bar, and community outreach. For more information on these efforts, please contact PTA president Kathy Reives at kiki1kat@yahoo.com

Become a community supporter. Many neighborhood businesses and organizations provide discounts to Claremont staff and families or provide other types of support. For a list of regular contributors, click here. If you are interested in becoming a supporter, please contact PTA president Kathy Reives at kiki1kat@yahoo.com.

• Make a Donation. The PTA holds several fundraisers to benefit school programs throughout the year, and as a nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation it may also receive tax-deductible donations. Donations should be made payable to Claremont PTA and mailed to Claremont Middle School PTA, 5750 College Ave., Oakland, CA 94618.
